REPORTER:
Fox 13 News / fox13now.com (Salt Lake City, Utah) is looking for a top-notch, experienced reporter. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism, communication, related field or equivalent and at least three years of professional reporting experience at a local broadcast affiliate. Applicants must also have a smooth on-air delivery, good verbal skills, a pleasant voice and on-air appearance, and excellent live reporting skills. Additional qualifications include sound newsgathering abilities, strong writing skills, creative story ideas, and an "eye" for stories with audience appeal. Candidates must have the proven ability to consistently compile accurate, journalistically sound news reports under the direction of news management. Applicant must be Internet-savvy, with experience gathering information and filing stories on several different platforms: TV, radio, web, social networking, etc. Fluency in Spanish is a plus. Applicants may be required to take a current events quiz and a writing test. Please provide a DVD or video link containing examples of your recent TV experience as part of the application process.
EXECUTIVE PRODUCER:
Who needs coffee? Does local news give you the jolt you need in the morning? KSTU Fox 13 is looking for a creative, dynamic, experienced broadcast journalist to oversee Good Day Utah. We produce 23 hours of morning news programming a week and we lead the market in innovative ways to inform the Salt Lake City DMA. Want to join the team as our new Executive Producer?
Our next Executive Producer must have strong news judgement, excellent writing and communication skills, plus a keen grasp on how to push Fox 13 news and information across several platforms. We prefer candidates with a college degree, minimum of three years producing experience and previous news management experience.
JOB DESCRIPTION
AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY: Oversee the day-to-day production and coordination of "Good Day Utah" and "Live at Eleven" by ensuring journalistic excellence and creativity, achieving ratings goals, managing resources, and supervising news producers to enhance KSTU's success and reputation as a responsible news organization.
REPORTS TO: Vice President/News Director
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Review stories, scripts and rundowns with producers and reporters to ensure proper content, tight news writing, effective crafting, continuity and thorough coverage of news and community events. Double-check for factual, informational and spelling errors
2. Manage coverage of breaking news ensuring all production and technical elements are properly coordinated.
3. Coordinate news coverage with web team so "Good Day Utah" and fox13now.com are aggressive and consistent. Also oversee morning information delivery on social media sites and other web sites.
4. Oversee promotion and branding of "Good Day Utah" by advising topical producers, and web producers on upcoming newscasts and events.
5. Prepare annual performance appraisals and regularly review and critique all producers and associate producers, under the direction of the News Director; meet regularly with producers, associate producers, anchors and reporters to review newscasts and outlines for upcoming newscasts, provide guidance and training as needed.
6. Under the direction of the News Director, establish strategic short- and long-term objectives for "Good Day Utah" and "Live at Eleven."
7. Serve as liaison from dayside to nightside shifts.
8. Serve as member of the KSTU News Management Team. Participate in weekly news management meetings with the News Director, Assistant News Director, PM Executive Producer and Chief Photographer. Rotate as a weekend "on call" news manager as assigned.
9. Regularly contribute to editorial content by:
a. reading newspapers, periodicals, wire services, day files, screening news feeds, etc.
b. regularly critiquing and evaluating content with the News Director to ensure editorial consistency, standards, direction, and news judgement.
10. Coordinate coverage of special news events (election coverage, special news conferences, etc.) as assigned.
11. Assist News Director in preparing annual fiscal budgets. Carry out other special projects as assigned.
12. Under the direction of the News Director, coordinate the screening and interviewing of candidates for open positions with the Human Resources Director.
13. Establish and coordinate work schedules, vacations, and other time off for all producers and associate producers. Approve vacation requests and time sheets for other newsroom personnel in the absence of or under the direction of the News Director.
14. Fill-in for producers and associate producers as needed.
OTHER FUNCTIONS: 1. Other duties as assigned.
BROADCAST IT SYSTEMS SPECIALIST:
Essential functions; maintenance of on air and news broadcast related automation systems; work with Information Systems manager and Engineering department on broadcast related WAN/LAN Infrastructure planning and support. Technical support for Web operation. Provide operational expertise and support for all digital media systems. Full benefits package available.
Essential Qualifications:
Minimum 7 years, broadcast technical and operations experience in large scale media environment 10 years experience in the broadcast operations field. Previous experience operating standard broadcasting equipment (i.e., master control switcher; IT based program servers and automation systems. Newsroom computer and server based play out systems
- Solid understanding of systems infrastructure technology including network LAN/WAN server and computer systems
- Thorough understanding of file transfer systems, digital satellite feeds,
- Ability to direct the work of others, providing ongoing training as needed
- Proven organizational skills to maintain an accurate equipment inventory set up effective train schedules for new systems.
- Ability to project a professional image over the phone and in person with co-workers and clients while working under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven record of dependability and ability to work a variety of schedules to meet company needs.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer applicants with a BS degree in, Communication, related field or equivalent; Computer Systems certifications Cisco, Microsoft ETC.
'NEWS AT NINE' PRODUCER:
KSTU/FOX 13, Utah's fastest growing news department, is looking for a creative, cutting edge producer for our flagship 9pm newscast. If you're in the business of crafting, not stacking, Fox 13 wants to hear from you. We're looking for an innovative producer full of new ideas; someone willing to take a fresh approach to our already successful prime time newscast. News junkies with knowledge of the Salt Lake City market will get the most attention!
- Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Select compelling, important, empowering content for hour long newscast. Be an active participant in editorial meetings.
- Write stories and teases. Assign team of reporters, anchors and associate producers to write crisp, accurate copy.
- Proofread/Edit every aspect of the show. Factual, spelling and graphics errors will not be tolerated.
- Work with director, TD and graphic designers to visually enhance information in the newscast. Effective use of full screen graphics, lower thirds, boxes, and more a must.
- Always look for ways to incorporate the station's website, Fox13now.com, into newscast.
- Work with assignment desk to coordinate unbeatable coverage of every story and be aggressive on breaking news.
- Work with newsroom management team to ensure compelling, journalistically sound coverage of news on a daily basis.

TECHNICIAN/MASTER CONTROL OPERATOR:
Position Summary: Switch to designated sources (i.e., programming and commercials) as ordered on official log and in accordance with FCC Rules & Regulations. Operate studio cameras and/or teleprompter for newscasts as assigned. REPORTS TO: Operations Supervisor
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Perform the following master control operator duties as assigned:
- air the correct programs and continually check quality of on-air programming including commercials, Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and promotional spots
- switch correctly to designated sources according to the official broadcast log, documenting correct time on commercials, PSAs and promos telecast
- maintain a discrepancy report for each shift
- check for availability and compensate for missing spots
- place rating code at the beginning of each program, monitor and place the appropriate KSTU logo during programs, including legal ID
- receive and/or air Emergency Alert System (EAS) and document times aired or received on the log and EAS book
- monitor audio and video levels of all sources going over the air according to FCC guidelines
- ensure compliance with the 1990 FCC Children's Act
2. Act as back-up tape operator as assigned by catching all satellite feeds; setting up correct programs to air; transferring and barcoding commercial and promotional spots and public service announcements (PSAs); ensuring all programming is ready to air as scheduled; recording air checks; cleaning heads, etc.
3. Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of KSTU programming schedules, programming changes, station sales promotions and other promotional activities, etc.
4. Maintain confidentiality with respect to KSTU's programming schedules, future plans, strategies or changes to programming or newscasts.
5. Professionally represent KSTU by creating and maintaining a pleasant, friendly atmosphere.
PART-TIME STUDIO TECHNICIAN (Not to exceed 17 hours a week):
KSTU continually accepts applications for this position although there may or may not be an opening available. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Prefer applicants with experience on a studio production crew operating studio cameras, teleprompter, etc. Demonstrated aptitude for operating broadcasting equipment, ability to effectively work under pressure in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
