TOOELE, Utah - A probable cause statement reveals that a shooting in Tooele may have been the result of an alleged affair. Jack VanGrimbergen has been booked into jail on investigation of attempted homicide after police in Tooele said he shot his wife. The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, police said, in the driveway of a home near 200 West and 400 North. Tooele Police Lt. Paul Wimmer said the 44-year-old man pulled out a handgun and shot his wife, Heather.

In the P.C. statement police wrote that she was shot multiple times including in the face. Police also reported that Jack told them he found out his wife was cheating on him. The police statement said, "He said he was so mad that he wanted to shoot his wife. He said he did not remember what happen (sic) after he drank a large amount of alcohol. He said if his wife was shot he probably did it."

Heather VanGrimbergen was still in the hospital on Friday morning and remained in critical condition. Police said there were indications that she would survive.

Neighbor Elaine Burke said she looked out her window and spied the VanGrimbergen's 11-year-old daughter walking down the road. She appeared to be in shock and had only one shoe on, Burke said.

"I got kind of suspicious. I thought, 'Kids don't walk around with one shoe' and she had a look of panic on her face," Burke told Fox 13 News. "I opened the door and said, 'Are you OK?' She says, 'No,' she says, 'My dad just shot my mom.' I says, 'Come here dear,' and I grabbed her and cuddled her and said, 'You're going to be OK.' "

Burke said the girl told her she initially thought the shooting was "a prank" but then her mother shouted: "run." Police said two family members were in the home at the time of the shooting.

Burke said after settling the girl down, she looked outside to see police officers arrive. Wimmer said officers immediately provided aid to Heather VanGrimbergen. She was flown by medical helicopter to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray where she was last reported to be in critical condition.

Police said Jack VanGrimbergen was inside the home and surrendered after officers called him to come out of the home. A handgun was recovered, and officers were seen serving a search warrant late Thursday.

VanGrimbergen was booked into the Tooele County Jail on investigation of attempted homicide, a first-degree felony, police said.
