The days of installing software on your PC is quickly fading. Google mail and Yahoo mail have developed into full featured e-mail clients and no longer require you to install programs like Microsoft Outlook. Now, we're seeing the same thing happen with word processing, spreadsheets, image editing and more. Check out some of my favorite "cloud" computing applications below!
Google Documents If you have a Gmail account then you're already half way there! Write and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations using Google Docs. You can import and export to standard formats like Microsoft Word. Plus, your documents are always stored "in the cloud" so you can access them from anywhere.
Adobe Buzzword Adobe's answer to Google Docs in Buzzword. It doesn't offer spreadsheet support but the document application is much easier on the eyes. For obvious reasons it uses Adobe Flash which makes for a much "richer" user experience. Worth a try if you haven't seen it before!
Picnik Photo Editing Picnik is a very well developed site that allows you to upload your own photos and do some basic photo manipulation. This site isn't trying to be Photoshop but it will serve most people's needs. Balance colors, crop, resize, remove red-eye and more. Once your done you can output your photo back to your computer.
Aviary Software Tools Aviary is an entire suite of online applications. Their image editor looks, feels and performs like Adobe Photoshop. Sure, it doesn't offer all of the features but it does basic multi-layer photo editing. If you're looking for quick access to Photoshop "like" editing without installing any application on your PC, this is it! I also like the brand new multi-track audio editing application! Both are free. Check them out at aviary.com.
