SALT LAKE CITY -
Political Insider's polled by Utahpolicy.com and Fox 13 say three term Senator Bob Bennett is vulnerable inside his own party, despite the fact his chief rival has backed out of the race. After Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff pulled himself from consideration, Senator Bob Bennett's chances increased dramatically, but dissatisfaction within the party could signal trouble in the state Republican nominating convention.
In order to stand as his party's candidate, Bennett must get approval at the state convention. 31.8% of Republican insiders responding to our survey suggest he may not get that approval. The majority of republicans, 56.8%, believe Bennett will win the election, a low number for such a long-standing incumbent.
"In some parts of the state, especially within the party structure or with party delegates, Bennett is seen as a rino or republican in name only simply because he has some moderate stances," said Bryan Schott, managing editor of Utahpolicy.com.
FOX 13's Max Roth reports.
