About 19,000 Utah students went back to school Monday as 27 year-round schools in the Jordan School District reopened. Many of the teachers who would have retired after the last school year are also returning to the classroom during the economic downturn. The Jordan School District hired 78 new teachers this year, compared with the 340 hired last year. Earlier this year, the Jordan School District was split, creating the Canyons School District, which serves Cottonwood Heights, Sandy, Midvale, Alta and Draper. That split helps to explain why the Jordan School District had a significantly smaller number of new teacher hires this year.

"The teachers we have hired, because there's been so few, I think were very grateful to have those jobs. And that's good news for students because that means we really have hired the very best candidates," said Melinda Colton of the Jordan School District.

The starting salary for new teachers in the Jordan School District is $33,000. FOX 13's Katy Carlyle reports.
