SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -
An Iraq war veteran and former U.S. Marine who pleaded guilty to robbing a Sandy bank in March has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in federal prison. Codie Carver pleaded guilty in federal court in October to one count of bank robbery. The 24-year-old's mother says that he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after returning from Iraq. She has said he was put on medication for depression but eventually stopped taking it.
The Washington Mutual bank branch in Sandy was robbed March 9.
U.S. District Court Judge Tena Campbell said Friday she would recommend to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons that Carver serve his sentence at a federal mental health facility.
Carver also was ordered to complete three years of supervised release after leaving prison and pay $2,000 in restitution to the bank.
