SALT LAKE CITY - One of Utah's most succesful business owners wants to replace Senator Bob Bennett. Fred Lampropoulos has been a political player as a major contributor to candidates for years, including contributing to Senator Bennett. Lampropoulos has only run for office once before: an unsuccessful bid for governor in a crowded Republican field in 2004. Lampropoulos lost to Jon Huntsman Jr. and Nolan Karras in the party convention. He outspent all other candidates, throwing 2.3 million dollars at the unsuccessful campaign.

"He enjoys campaigning more than any candidate I have seen," said his former campaign manager and current party chair Dave Hansen.

Senator Bennett says Lampropoulos will remain a friend, but he said he is not worried about the challenge. "Fred we welcome you to the race," Bennett told Fox 13, "But we frankly don't expect that you are going to get all that much traction."

Bennett cited the need to win over at least 40 percent of the 3500 delegates to the state convention. Two other Republicans, Tim Bridgewater and Sherilyn Eager, are challenging Bennett.
