SALT LAKE CITY -
The ACLU is against a bill that passed the Utah Senate Committee Tuesday, which would require DNA sampling for violent felony offenders. Critics say this violates a person's right to privacy regardless if they committed a crime or not. Senate Bill 277 calls for DNA samples to be collected upon booking for people who commit violent felonies.
The samples would not be processed until there is probable cause or a preliminary hearing.
The sponsor of the bill Senator J. Stuart Adams says there have been too many cases where people have been wrongly convicted and people that should have been convicted go free.
Senator Adams said the strong support of Elizabeth Smart's family will speed up the process on the bill.
