WEST JORDAN, Utah -
The Bluffdale man charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting one of his neighbors appeared in a West Jordan courtroom Wednesday. Reginald Campos, 43, also faces two counts of aggravated assault stemming from the July 22 incident. Campos claims David Serbeck, the shooting victim, and Troy Peterson were harassing his teenage daughter prior to the shooting. Serbeck and Peterson had been patrolling their Bluffdale neighborhood as participants in an unofficial neighborhood watch program meant to curb the recent break-ins in the area.
Serbeck and Peterson approached two girls who were walking on a sidewalk and began questioning them. The girls got into a car and were followed by Serbeck and Peterson. One girl called her father, Reginald Campos, who confronted the two men. A 911 operator later received a call from Campos himself, who admitted to shooting Serbeck.
"He threatened my daughter and, when I pulled them over, a guy pulled a gun on me and I shot him," Campos told the 911 operator. "I don't know. I shot him three times. He got out of his car and pulled a gun on me and cocked it and I let him have it."
Alicia Cook of the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office says Campos, not Serbeck, was the aggressor in that situation.
"Mr. Serbeck never fired his weapon. In fact, as he came out of the vehicle, he attempted to de-escalate the situation by placing his weapon on the ground and kicking it away from himself," Cook said.
Campos' bail was reduced from $500,000 to $100,000 and he is expected to bail out of jail Wednesday.
