ORDERVILLE, Utah - A 15-year-old boy from Orderville, Utah died after getting struck by a baseball. The boy, Jeff Wood, was standing in center field and a line drive was hit by the batter. The ball hit Wood in the torso, possibly the chest, dropping him immediately to the ground. An off-duty Kane County Sheriff's deputy was the first medically trained person to arrive to give Wood CPR. The deputy arrived within 30 seconds after the incident. Glover said the boy's fother, Jim Wood, is the principal of the southern Utah school and was one of the emergency responders to the scene.

Glover said the town's emergency medial technicians were in a nearby training session when the call came in to Kane County Dispatch at 6:15 a.m. and responded in two minutes.

Resuscitation efforts had already begun when EMTs arrived, but the boy could not be revived.

Glover said the boy had complained of a side ache before he took to the field, but Glover did not know if that was related to what killed him. He said the team had just completed a new ball field and had only practiced on it a few times.

The boy's body was sent to the medical examiner's office in Salt Lake City for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
