The Jordan School District offically split and the new Canyon School District, covering the Cottonwood Heights, Sandy, Midvale, Alta and Draper areas celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday. Officials said the Jordan School District was overcrowded. A vote passed to make the new Canyon School district, which will now serve 33,000 students and 44 schools.
The Canyon School District is the 41st district in the state, and is also the first new district in 100 years in Utah.
The celebration will kick off with a sign changing ceremony at 12:30 p.m. followed by a bus parade from 3 to 5 p.m.
