SANDY, Utah - It was the first day of school for the newly created Canyons School District. The district, borne out of a split from the Jordan School District, officially began holding classes on Wednesday. Officials said there were some minor problems. "A few buses showing up late or missing a few kids here and there. But nothing that we haven't been able to correct or deal with in a timely manner from what we can tell," said Dr. David Doty, the superintendent of the Canyons District.

A special shuttle bus was sent to pick up the students that were left behind, Doty said. On Wednesday morning, a robbery near Hillcrest High School led the district to place the school in lockdown. It was lifted about 45 minutes later, said district spokesman Jeff Haney.

A special hotline was set up with about 10 people manning the phones to resolve any problems or answer questions from people who live within the new Canyons School District boundaries. From the time the offices opened on Wednesday, the phones were ringing off the hook. The hotline will be manned until Tuesday of next week, Doty said.

The phone number is 801-501-1000.

In 2007, voters in Alta, Cottonwood Heights, Draper, Midvale and Sandy created the district, breaking it apart from the Jordan School District. The district split has been settled, Canyons officials said, and its assets all divided. The Canyons District now has about 33,000 students. It is the fifth largest school district in the state with 44 schools.
