SALT LAKE CITY -
Free health and dental checkups are being offered for children in Salt Lake and Ogden as an annual two day tradition. The Junior League CARE Fair is held Friday and Saturday with doctors, nurses and dentists volunteering their time to aid kids who are uninsured and need health checks. Last year, more than 2,200 children got the free services, which include physicals, immunizations, dental work and other exams.
"I come from a low-income family. I'm not working right now so we don't have the resources to get out there to work," says Lydia Reyes who was taking her kids to the fair. "This is a good opportunity to get all the help that we can from the connection." Doctors say it is not uncommon to find children with numerous cavities, high blood pressure, or other medical problems. And health officials say preventative care -- even free like this -- saves money in the long run. The event has even saved lives.
"We make sure that the children who are seen, if they are priorities, that they are getting follow-up care," says Tracy Rich-Greiner from Children's Health Connection.
