SALT LAKE CITY—
Two bottles that appeared to be Molotov cocktails were found smashed in the road in front of the Congregation Kol Ami Jewish Synagogueý Wednesday morning at 2425 Heritage Way in Salt Lake City. Police arrived at the scene shortly after 9:00 a.m. They called in a haz-mat team and fire investigators to help identify the liquid substance splashed on the road. They were able to determine that it was not flammable. Police collected evidence and are proceeding with their investigation because of the potential that it is a hate crime."You move these events a block south and it's just a couple bottles of water in the roadway. Maybe it doesn't mean anything unless I can figure something out about the surrounding houses. But, we're all aware of the world we live in today and this is a synagogue," said Lt. Craig Gleason, Salt Lake City Police.
Tamar Meir, director of the synagogue, said hate crimes against the Jewish faith are not rare in other parts of the world. She has not experienced any hate crimes over the past two years at this location, but is not surprised.
"We're not duly alarmed but the message is pretty clear that whoever did this was trying to send. Again, it is worrying," Meir said.
Salt Lake Police investigators plan to work with the fire department to identify the liquid inside the bottles. They are also trying to lift fingerprints from the shards of glass found at the scene.
