SALT LAKE CITY - A Department of the Interior memo leaked to Utah First District Congressman Rob Bishop shows the Obama administration is thinking about creating national monuments out of a number of parcels of land in the Western United States. And Republicans are upset at the prospect, saying that creating the monuments would block potential development in those areas.

Two of the parcels are in Utah: the San Rafael Swell features some of the United States' most unique geology and some of Utah's most famous narrow canyons. The Cedar Mesa area is home to hundreds of ancestral pueblan ruins along with stunning natural beauty. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance has long listed both areas as sights they'd like to see preserved as some form of wilderness.

Utah political leaders are almost unanimous in opposition to a unilateral declaration from President Obama. Utah's congressmen, senators, and the governor are all opposed.
