SALT LAKE CITY - Relatives say 86-year old Ann Smart Pearce came out of a coma Saturday and continues to improve from the brutal beating she endured on New Year's Day. Friday morning, Unified Police detectives said 45-year old Arthel B. Martin, beat, choked and may have sexually assaulted Smart Pearce.

Martin had been renting a room in the basement of her Millcreek home. Two other tenants heard the commotion and came to the victim's aid while Martin ran away. Smart Pearce was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and in a coma Friday. Her daughter-in-law, Amy C. Maddocks, told FOX 13 News Saturday that Ann had regained consciousness and was even able to communicate with them a little bit.
