SALT LAKE CITY - The Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah (HEAL Utah) is asking the state to put a stop to the importing of depleted uranium. Salt Lake City-based EnergySolutions imports and disposes of the weakly radioactive toxic metal at its Clive facility in Tooele County. While relatively safe now, the nuclear byproduct grows more dangerous over the years. HEAL Utah is asking Utah's Radiation Control Board to issue a moratorium on the disposal of depleted uranium in Utah until the federal government develops explicit guidelines.

"We believe that future generations deserve the same protection from this dangerous material that we have today," said Vanessa Pierce of HEAL Utah.

Jill Sigal, Sr. Vice President for Government Relations for EnergySolutions, said the depleted uranium stored in Utah is not posing a threat.

"We have disposed of depleted uranium for many, many years at the Clive site and have done so safely," Sigal said.
