Salt Lake City, Utah -
Flight training week has officially started for two young falcons nesting in downtown Salt Lake City. The eggs hatched Memorial Day weekend. The famous peregrine pair nest in a box on the edge of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. Falcons have nested in the city since 1984. When the young falcons take flight, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and dedicated volunteers spend every daylight hour watching over the birds.
Monday, the male fledging left the box for the first time but crash landed. His first flight was a few days ahead of schedule but Bob Walters, the DWR watchable wildlife coordinator scooped him up and returned him to the nest.
The male was out testing his wings again on Tuesday. His sister has not left the nest yet. Volunteers are needed to keep watch in the next two weeks as the falcons learn to fly.
