SALT LAKE CITY - Federal authorities are preparing to auction off hundreds of high-end, exotic cars belonging to a man indicted in a multi-million dollar fraud scheme. The auction will be a chance to see some rare and collectible cars. The U.S. Marshal's Service expects to sell all of the cars that will go on the auction block beginning Jan. 7. The cars were seized from Jeffrey L. Mowen when he was indicted on a fraud charge.

They are being stored in an undisclosed warehouse, U.S. Marshal's said. The 220 cars include a DeLorean, a replica of the "General Lee" from the TV show "Dukes of Hazzard," exotic cars, classic muscle cars, vintage cars, motorcycles, Porsches, Bentley's, Mercedes, BMWs, and even rare cars from the early 20th century.

It is costing the U.S. Marshal's Service $20,000 a month to store the cars, so they obtained permission from a federal judge to sell the cars before Mowen's case even goes to trial.

"Once the case is finally adjudicated, any of the individuals who filed claims on this case, the investors and people that were defrauded in the case, will receive the payment," deputy U.S. Marshal Dan Jeurgens told Fox 13 News.

Mowen can file to recoup what was auctioned off if he is acquitted at trial. He was famous for his car collection.

Mowen was indicted by a federal grand jury in a multi-million dollar fraud scheme. Shortly after being charge, Mowen fled to Panama, authorities said. While in the Davis County Jail, federal prosecutors charged him with trying to have four witnesses in the criminal case against him killed.

Auctioneers say there has been interest from car collectors all over the world. Because of the immense public interest, they have scheduled a showing of the cars on January 4, 5 and 6 at a warehouse in North Salt Lake.

"To me, this is better than a museum collection because you have a lot of period cars, and then they've been modified and super-modified," said Rob Olson of Erkelens & Olson Auctioneers, which will be conducting the auction. "You do not see this type of collection under one roof very often."
