First of Six Common Ground Initiatives Fails During Second Day of Legislative Session

SALT LAKE CITY - The second day of the legislative session was in full swing, as the first of six initiatives part of the large Common Ground Initiative was introduced Tuesday. The Common Ground bill would offer certain equal rights to members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community.

The first of the initiaves to be debated by Legislators was on the topic wrongful death. State Bill 32, however, failed. A comitteee voted agaist the bill, stating wrongful death would be a slippery road that could lead to gay marriage. The bill would have allowed gay or straight individuals to take part in legal lawsuits if a loved one died a wrongful death due to malpreactice. Legistators, however, say the bill attempts to change the definition on who is an heir.

The reamining bills pertain to other human and civil rights, such as fair housing, employment and health care.
