Residents clean up, assess damage of floods in Eagle Mountain

Residents are cleaning up and assessing the damage from floods in Eagle Mountain over the weekend that left sinkholes, a river of mud and pools of water in home basements.

The floods were a result of an intense thunderstorm Sunday night that had Eagle Mountain residents scrambling to prevent water from entering homes. Thunder, lightning, hail and rain struck Eagle Mountain at around 6 p.m. The storm lasted less than an hour, but the cleanup is expected to take days.

Some of the hardest-hit homes are along Summit Way, close to the eastern foothills of the city.

Leanne Christensen had had issues with flooding before and had taken precautions in her basement and backyard, but drainage issues between homes had never been properly addressed, causing sinkholes between residences.

"There's only so much you can do in between the houses, where the window wells are. Backyards are one thing but it's the sides that are more of an issue," Christensen said.

Some residents are on vacation, other homes are vacant and for sale, so the number of homes facing flooding isn't known yet, but neighbors are pitching in to help clean up the damage.

"Huge amounts of clean-up and hopefully it won't rain again," said Mandy Bradshaw.
