WEST VALLEY CITY - Think you know the right way to wash your hands? Odds are, you're not as thorough as you need to be.

A group of fourth graders at Silver Hills Elementary were taught the proper way to wash their hands during a demonstration Monday. Diane Pope volunteers her time at the school, teaching every class proper hand washing techniques.

"You need to get lather on your hands," she told the class. "Soap 'em up!"

To demonstrate why, she put a substance on the students' hands and has them wash just like they normally would. Under a black light, it revealed the "germs."

"Gross!" said Caden Peterson.

"What did you learn from it then?" he was asked by Fox 13's Ben Winslow.

"I need to was my hands better," he replied.

Pope said people forget key areas, including the wrists and between the fingers. (See the video to see where else people forget to wash.)

Schools are essentially a petri dish where germs can easily spread. They hope that by teaching proper hygiene, students will help fight the flu and other diseases.

Silver Hills Elementary School officials have been proactive in fighting germs. Letters went home to students, telling them about the flu danger. Signs warning about the flu are also up all over the school. A special assembly was held to teach students the proper way to sneeze.

"We were worried about the flu, because everybody's been talking about it so we had a sneezing assembly, and we learned how to sneeze into your elbow or into your shoulder," said principal Paula Sorenson.

When a sickly student asks to use the phone in the office to call home, an office assistant wipes it down with a disinfecting wipe.

Kylee Tollett said she learned a valuable lesson about hand washing.

"That I need to wash my hands," she said, adding: "Use soap!"
