VERNAL, Utah -
Health officials are investigating a possible swine flu outbreak at Uintah High School in Vernal, after hundreds of students were out sick last week. About a quarter of the 1,150 students at the school were absent last week and sick with the flu. On Tuesday, 144 students stayed home. By Thursday, the number out jumped to 245. Administrators decided to cancel that night's junior varsity football game. On Friday, there were still 225 students out sick and the Varsity game with Spanish Fork was postponed and all sports and music rehearsals and practices were also cancelled.
On Monday, there were 146 kids out sick and 42 of them had flu-like symptoms.
Principal Wilde said there are not any extra-curricular activities cancelled and she said at no point was closing school considered. She said with so many out sick, officials at the Tri-County Health Department were concerned because it is technically not flu season yet.
