SALT LAKE CITY -
A man convicted of sexually abusing his family members may receive a shot at leaving prison after his third parole hearing Thursday in court. The man, Brent Young, was a Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputy when he was arrested on child sex abuse charges back in 2002. He went to prison later that year for a sentence that could run as long as 25 years.
On Thursday, during his third parole hearing Young had a chance to tell the board of pardons why he deserves a shot at freedom. Victims in response spoke out about why he needs to remain locked up.
Young's daughter, Nicole, said her father started molesting her as a young child and it took her a decade to come forward about the sexual abuse. She said she is slowly regaining some control over her life and says her father needs to stay locked up for her sake and the sake of other victims out there.
For his part, Young admitted he's a pedophile who's at risk to re-offend, but claims he can control his urges if released from prison. The Board of Pardons officials, however, seems to think Young may not have even admitted to all the children he's victimized.
A decision on his parole will not be official for a few weeks, but based on the comments on Thursday, Brent Young may be staying at the Utah State Prison for several more years.
