SPANISH FORK, Utah - Utah County Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a 50-year-old man Tuesday after they say he pointed a gun at them. The man was shot after leading police on a high-speed chase near the south end of Utah Lake. Police received a 911 call from the man who was said to be suicidal. According to Utah Sheriff's, Lt. Darren Gilbert, dispatch listened to the man who said he had taken pills. Then the 911 dispatch soon heard six or seven shots followed by labored breathing.

Gilbert says officers found a 50-year-old man near Lincoln Beach near Spanish Fork. They had pinpointed his cell phone signal and spotted his pickup truck from a small fixed wing airplane.

Gilbert says that when officers approached the man, he started his vehicle and rammed a police car. A short car chase ensued before Gilbert says the man got out of the vehicle and pointed a gun directly at officers.

Gilbert says two deputies fired at the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man's name has not been released, but was said to be a Utah County resident. No others were hurt or injured during the event.
