SALT LAKE CITY -
The longest running live network broadcast, "Music and the Spoken Word" originated in Utah and the popular radio program is celebrating its 80th anniversary this Sunday. The program airs from the Mormon Tabernacle on Temple Square. The first broadcast aired on July 15, 1929 and the program today still begins exactly as it did 80 years ago. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir provides all the music and the spoken words remain inspirational to its listeners.
"Our program is designed to be a nondenominational program and has been from its very beginning," said Mack Wilberg, music director of "Music and the Spoken Word."
Wilberg attributes the choir's success to singing for the people. The program has traveled around the world broadcasting and performing its music to hundreds of countries.
The 80th anniversary will be celebrated this Sunday with some of the choir's most popular members. After the broadcast, church leaders will speak to performers and to those in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City.
FOX 13's Max Roth reports.
