SALT LAKE CITY -
The LDS Church recently confirmed that President Barack Obama's mother was posthumously baptized in a LDS temple last year. Helen Radkey, a family history researcher, was going through baptismal records when she came across the name of Barack Obama's mother, Ann Dunham. The records indicate that a proxy baptism and endowment in the Provo temple was performed for Dunham in 2008.
Dunham died in 1995 and not much is known about her religious affiliation. President Obama calls himself a Christian, but not a Mormon.
The LDS Church says they have performed baptisms in proxy for deceased relatives for nearly 180 years. Church policy is that persons can not be baptized posthumously any earlier than 95 years after death if a direct descendant has not submitted their name.
The LDS Church released a statement to FOX 13, which said, "The Church is looking into the circumstances of how this happened and does not yet have all the facts. However, this is a serious matter and we are treating it as such."
Radkey has contacted the White House with this information and has not yet received a reply back.
FOX 13's Andrea Fujii has more.
