OGDEN -
Ogden's Marshall N. White Recreation Center has had several near misses of being shut down in its 40-year history. And in the past year it has again nearly been shut down, had it not been for the the community who organized to keep its doors open. A deal is being signed Monday for the non-profit Ogden-Weber Community Action Partnership to manage the center. It's profits will be used to maintain and keep it open to the public.
"Our weight room averaged about 20 people a month; we're up to 400 right now," says Marshall White Center Director, Tyrona Aranda. "Our swimming pool, there's probably a good 5-600 people who use that on a monthly basis."
The center came close to being shut down by the city because it was losing money. Most of the patrons near the downtown center are low-income.
"Obviously, I think the intent was to shut it down. but when they had a partner like us, to say wait a minute, wait a minute, this is what we do, we'll help you," says Ogden-Weber Community Action Partner's Executive Director, Dr. Donald Carpenter.
The center has been a second home for many people in the neighborhood. Winston White grew up in the Ogden neighborhood, playing sports in the same recreation center named after his father, who was a police officer shot and killed in the line of duty.
