Salt Lake Police gave warning about the dangers of homemade bombs by exploding such materials to show their effects. Police set off a series of dry ice and chemical bombs Tuesday afternoon to demonstrate the damage they can render using basic ingredients found in the home. "They use them quite often to blow up mailboxes--that's the prank, but we'll see them where it blow parts of these 50 feet and damage a house, damage buildings," Bomb Squad Commander, Sgt. Carl Merino said.

According to police, there are 30 to 50 incidents a year involving homemade bombs -- many of whose participants meant only to detonate them as pranks. The most recent incident was almost a week ago when five adults were arrested for setting off devices on the West High Football field. They are now facing third degree felonies. Police say if people do not take the physical risks seriously, they will face potential criminal charges.
