LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah -
Rescue crews used a helicopter Monday morning to save two hikers who spent a frosty night stranded on a cliff in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Salt Lake County Sheriffs officials say the two Sandy men, both in their early twenties, were stuck on a sheer cliff with no ropes, equipment and little climbing experience. After apparently getting lost while hiking down the Gate Buttress trail, the men called for help on a cell phone. Authorities decided it was too dangerous to attempt a rescue at night.
Rescue workers lowered blankets, lights, a radio, food and other necessities from a helicopter to help the men survive overnight.
"These individuals, their skill level, they've gotten in a situation way over their heads," said Sgt. Cory Latham of the Salt Lake County Sheriffs Office.
Neither man was injured.
