Salt Lake County - Salt Lake County takes its drastically reduced 2010 budget to the public. Mayor Peter Corroon is proposing a $164 million cut in spending from the now $801 million budget. The 2010 budget was boiled down in a community meeting Monday night in Kearns. Residents learned public safety will not be compromised and senior and youth programs will stay.

Mayor Corroon is also proposing a $13.4 million tax increase that is an estimated $20 a year for a $260,000 priced home. Just a few months ago, Corroon vetoed a tax hike that was half that price. Salt Lake County Deputy, Mayor Nichole Dunn said, "if you know the mayor, this is a very hard decision. He is very much opposed to tax increases and what that means to the family budget but he is also conscientious of public safety."

Salt Lake County employees will take a 2.75 percent hit to their salaries. Their 401k contributions were already suspended and vacated positions not filled. The Salt Lake County Council will vote on the 2010 budget by December 1. Three more community meetings are scheduled for November.
