SALT LAKE CITY - SB113 prohibits cell phone use for drivers under 18 cleared with the Utah Senate committee at the State Capitol Tuesday evening. Sen. Ross Romero initially proposed the ban to prohibit drivers 17 and younger to use cell phones. "I've heard from a lot of parents who are saying, 'we think it's a good, reasonable restriction that will help us as a family communicate the importance of not being distracted while you drive'," said Romero.

University of Utah psychology professor, David Strayer said his research using driving simulators has found teen are six times more likely to crash if they are using a cell phone while driving. "We know that the crash risk is greater than if that child were drunk. And I can't really think of a case of where you would want that child to be driving down the road intoxicated, so I don't think you really want that child driving when they're talking on a phone either," says Strayer.
