SALT LAKE CITY - Sen. Chris Buttars (R) West Jordan, who has been a staunch supporter of banning gay marriage in the state, said he agrees with new laws in Salt Lake City that protect gays from discrimination at work and in housing matters. "My goodness, anybody should be able to have a house and a job without being threatened by their sexual choices unless they act out," Buttars said.

It is the issue of acting out that is significant to Buttars, along with gay marriage itself. Buttars is also concerned with fighting adoption rights that may come up this year.

"I meet with the gays here and there and they were in my house two weeks ago. I don't mind gays, but I don't want them stuffing it in my throat all the time and especially in my kid's face," said Buttars.

In 2004, the senator sponsored Utah's constitutional ammendment banning gay marriage. In 2006, he proposed legislation banning gay clubs in Utah public schools. But come 2010, he may be the name at the top of a bill protecting the rights of gay people to hold jobs and seek housing.

"I believe that a person ought to have a right to a house and to employment without having to worry about their sexual orientation," Buttars said, then adding, "Period. End of sentence." Buttars clarified he continues to oppose gay marriage rights and rights of gay couples to adopt children.
