SALT LAKE CITY -
Salt Lake City leaders on Monday launched a new campaign to educate voters on Proposition 1, which would fund a new public safety building for the city. Proposition 1 will be on the ballot for Salt Lake City voters this November, and the city is spending $75,000 on the campaign. If the proposition is passed, $125 million will be allocated for the new building, and property taxes will increase to offset that cost. Residents would pay $75 more each year in property taxes for an average-priced home. Business owners would see an increase of about $136/year. As Mayor Ralph Becker explained, the new building is long overdue.
"The [current Public Safety Building] is in horrible condition," Becker said in a press conference Monday. "This project, replacing the Public Safety Building, is more than 10 years overdue."
A similar proposition was rejected by voters in 2007. If Proposition 1 passes, construction on the new building is expected to be completed in three to four years.
