SALT LAKE CITY - A replica of the Statue of Responsibility, which will be the West Coast's companion to the Statue of Liberty, was unveiled to the Utah House on Friday morning. Legislators approved a resolution to make Utah the official birthplace of the monument, which will be made out of stainless steel and will stand around 300 feet high, about the same weight as the Statue of Liberty. Possible sites for the monument to be determined by its Utah-based foundation include San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Local artist Gary Lee Price drew his inspiration for the statue from Victor Frankel, a holocaust survivor.

"My concept is to have this stainless steel so it radiates light. I want it to be something that glows and gleams," said Price.

The Statue of Responsibility will have a visitors center complete with an observation deck, gift shop, restaurants and a book store.

The resolution to make Utah the official birthplace of the future monument will now move on the Senate for debate.

"When this 300 foot statue finds itself on the West Coast, it will be noted there that Utah was the birthplace of the Statue of Responsibility," said Rep. Michael T. Morley, the sponsor of the resolution.
