West Valley City police have concluded an investigation into a shallow grave found during a search of Utah's West Desert for clues in the disappearance of Susan Cox Powell.

Cadaver dogs had indicated that human remains were present what officials called a shalllow grave, but a dig found no human remains. Instead, the dig unveiled pieces of charred wood.

"We did find evidence that did indicate that something happened here," said Lt. Bill Merritt with the West Valley City Police Dept. "Not necessarily in this case, but something did happen."

The indication by cadaver dogs on the charred wood means that the wood did come in contact with human remains, but investigators don't know anything more about those remains.

Merritt says that investigators are disappointed by the findings in this hole, but aren't giving up.

"I think we put so much effort into this search and this hole," said Merritt. "We were disappointed."

A search of the area by West Valley City officials and search and rescue teams from Juab County will resume Sunday morning.
