RANDOLPH, Utah (AP) -
A Syracuse man out for the season opener of the Utah deer hunt had a fearful encounter with a female mountain lion. David Garcia was in New Canyon near Randolph on Saturday around sunrise. He had hiked to a pine-covered area and begun scouting for deer when he heard a stick break behind him. Expecting to see a squirrel, Garcia instead discovered a 150-pound mountain lion was within 30 feet of him.
Garcia says he thought about trying to scare the big cat away but instead decided to use his rifle. His shot went through the animal's neck, passed through its heart and exited near its front shoulder.
Investigators from the Ogden branch of the Division of Wildlife Resources investigated and determined Garcia killed the animal in self-defense.
