Teen Saves Toddler after SUV Flips into Drainage

Teen Saves Toddler after SUV Flips into Drainage (September 23, 2009)

WILLARD, Utah - Police say a three-year-old girl is alive thanks to the heroic efforts of a Box Elder County teenager. Todd Kano, 19, was driving home to Honeyville Tuesday afternoon, when he witnessed a car blow a tire and roll off the Southbound lanes on I-15 into a ditch. The 19-year old Kano was driving North and quickly doubled back to the crash scene. Some truck drivers were already there and had pulled three of the four children out of the overturned Dodge, which had quickly filled with mud and water. But Kano says the driver started screaming that the youngest child was still inside, strapped into a car seat. So Kano dove in, located the toddler, unbuckled her and got the child to safety.

But three-year-old Amara Young was not responsive, so Kano started CPR. She quickly started breathing on her own and was eventually transported to Primary Children's Medical Center. Kano says hearing her breathe was one of the best sounds he's ever heard. He says he's no hero and feels blessed to have been in the right place at the right time to help. Kano credits basic life saving skills he learned in Boy Scouts and in a more advanced class he took in high school.
