SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah Housing Coalition held a news conference at the Utah Food Bank Wednesday to let Utahns struggling with rent payments can know that a little help is available. The Utah Housing Coalition said nearly 48 percent of renters in Utah cannot afford a two bedroom apartment at fair market value, which is roughly $770 a month. Single parents and low-income families are hit the hardest by the high rent payments. Utah has not been hit as hard by the current recession compared to many other states, but times are still especially hard for renters.
Advocates said there are a variety of resources that can assist those struggling to pay rent.
"If you are in need of finding somewhere that could help you or someone that you can talk to about assistance and don't know who to call, please pick up your phone and dial 211," said Lorna Kochi of Utah Food Bank Services.
Kochi also said the call is free and is available statewide.
Over the past two years, the number of people seeking help from the Road Home shelter has doubled.
A record 250 families sought assistance between November 1 of last year and April 1 of this year.
