SALT LAKE CITY - If the Utahpolicy.com Fox13 political insiders are accurate, expect to pay more at the grocery store pretty soon. As the legislature looks for ways to get more money to already hurting state programs, they may seek to restore Utah's tax on unprepared food.

Nearly 67 percent of Democrats think the food tax will increase. Almost 60 percent of Republicans agree. The big distinction isn't in their prediction, but rather in their desire. Democrats do not want to restore the tax, largely seen as a regressive tax hurting the poor.

81.5 percent of Democratic insiders say the tax should stay low. 67.6 percent of Republicans see a tax increase as a way to fill a budget gap.

Utah reduced its food tax by two percent in 2007 and another one percent in 2008. Currently only Alabama and Mississippi charge a full sales tax on unprepared food.
