SALT LAKE CITY -
The inmates at the Utah State Prison are hard at work making take-out order for corrections officers and people on their way to work at their newest restaurant appropriately named 'Hard Times Cafe'. The cafe is located outside the Olympus minimum security facility at the point of the mountain. The restaurant is on prison property but the inmates who work at the restaurant say they hope customers look past that and try the food.
The cafe recently opened in 2009 and business has been slowly building. "Everybody that comes in says it's really good, the food's good. I think we've had a positive reaction from them," said Utah Dept. of Corrections Carolyn Price.
The inmates who work in the cafe are learning job skills that can help them when they are paroled. They have undergone culinary arts training through prison education programs. "I like it. It makes me feel like I'm not locked up," said inmate Angelo Arvizo.
Taxpayer dollars do not fund the cafe. Utah Correctional Industries is set up to be self-sufficient and money made from the restaurant goes back into it. Officers say the cafe is more of a service to give inmates job skills.
