CENTERFIELD, Utah (AP) -
A woman who pleaded guilty in the beating death of her 2-year-old daughter has been sentenced to up to 30 years in prison. Ariel Melinda Hampton pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree felony counts of child abuse homicide and obstruction of justice. Sixth District Judge Wallace Lee sentenced her immediately. The 23-year-old Sanpete County woman was charged in May with first-degree felony child abuse homicide days after her daughter, Kirsten Anderson, was pronounced dead on the way to a hospital.
Police have said Hampton told authorities she found the child face down in a wading pool. But a doctor said no water appeared to be in the child's lungs.
