STOCKTON, Utah (AP) -
A small-town mayor in Tooele County has been ousted by voters about a week after a controversy surfaced surrounding the suspension of a Stockton police officer. Stockton City Councilman Mark Whitney defeated Mayor Dan Rydalch by a 3-to-1 margin in Tuesday's municipal elections. Part-time Stockton police Cpl. Josh Rowell said he was fired by Rydalch after he cited Rydalch's 29-year-old son Oct. 20 for driving without a license. He said he was later told he was being suspended instead.
The Stockton Town Council last week voted to reinstate Rowell with back pay and some who attended the meeting called for Rydalch to resign.
n a statement read at last week's meeting Rydalch said the issue wasn't about his son but about officers stopping drivers outside the scope of a planned DUI checkpoint.
