SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake area mother and son both contracted COVID-19, became extremely sick but survived.

The son, Brandon Ussery, talked about from his home via FaceTime Wednesday.

He described how the virus infected them in March, despite the fact he thought they were following all the safety guidelines.

“We were taking the social distancing guidelines pretty seriously," Ussery said. "Then all of a sudden we just got sick and had it and then our condition just got worse from there, and then just a fever, shortness of breath.”

“ I was pretty surprised actually how hard it hit me because I thought, it won’t be like this for me," he added. "I saw other people that had it and weren’t sick you know like the celebrities, the Jazz players and all that and I was pretty surprised how it hit me harder than those guys and it put me on the ground for sure.”

Ussery said the night he and his mother finally decided to go to the hospital was especially nerve-racking.

They were told to go to a side entrance and then medical staff approached their vehicle in full protective gear to take them inside.

After being checked out they then went home and spent the next two weeks working through the symptoms.

Ussery said Utah Health Department officials did a very thorough job of contact-tracing where he and his mom had been prior to getting sick.

But he still has no idea where they contracted the virus.

Now they both hope and pray they haven’t infected anyone else.
