Utah COVID-19 trends look good after holiday surge

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's COVID-19 numbers are trending in exactly the right direction, which is important as the country faces a more contagious variant of the virus.

It's also clear evidence social gatherings during the holidays impacted case rates dramatically.

The chart below shows how case numbers decreased or increased in FOX 13's weekly tabulations. Columns going down indicate a decrease in cases, which represent the vast majority of people in Utah. The most populous county seeing a significant case increase is Sanpete County.

Overall, numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show Utah's vaccination rates rank 20th among the U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

Within Utah, most health department vaccination rates are comparable, except for the Tri-County and the Utah County Health Departments. San Juan County's extremely high rate is likely due to vaccines prioritized for the hard-hit Navajo Reservation.
