NEW YORK (AP) — New York's mammoth convention center started taking patients Tuesday to ease the growing burden caused by a surge in coronavirus cases in the U.S. epicenter.

The famed tennis center where the U.S. Open tennis is held is being converted into a temporary hospital as the death toll closed in on China's official count.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and health officials sent up a dire warning to the rest of the country that the crisis unfolding there is just a preview of what's to come for the rest of the country.

New York state's death toll climbed by more than 250 people in a day to over 1,200.

As worldwide infections soared past the 800,000 mark, the World Health Organization warned the pandemic is “far from over."
