SALT LAKE CITY — Home delivery has been popular for a long time and there's more of it going on now due to the coronavirus.

Police say package thieves, aka "Porch Pirates," are keeping a close eye on delivery vans as they make stops in neighborhoods.

On Monday May 11, two packages were stolen from the front porch of a home in Sugarhouse.

The homeowner noticed what was going on and confronted the man when he returned to take the second package.

The thief didn't react to the person's yelling, and just kept walking away with the package.

"I think these are crimes of opportunity," said Detective Greg Wilking with the Salt Lake Police Department. "They're seeing one of these delivery vans and they're taking advantage of the situation and realize something is out there on the porch. Any opportunity, they can go and take that item."

Police say that if you see a package thief, do not go after them or confront them. Instead report the theft to police as quickly as possible.
