Mealtime could be feeling tedious and monotonous right now to say the least. Here are a few tips from our Nutritionist, Trish Brimhall to help you survive your quarantine meals:
1. Culinary home-school. Your kids are doing it, and all sorts of people are taking advantage of online courses right now to learn things and skills they otherwise don’t dedicate time for. Make cooking one of those things. Whether that means teaching your kids how to plan, prepare and cook a meal or whether you want to conquer a culinary technique – take advantage and view mealtime as a great learning opportunity.
2. Shake it up conveniently. Think about picking up some deli meat during your next grocery shopping trip. Deli meats are well-stocked right now plus they are a convenient sources of protein and provide bioavailable sources of iron and zinc. So, shake it up, spread out a blanket in the family room and picnic with a Charcuterie board.
3. Let’s talk about desserts. Shop produce first so it can be a healthy go-to desssert. Next, if you’re going to bake treats, cut the recipe in half or consider freezing the rest of the cookies or individually wrap and freezing the brownies. That way you can get your occasional sugar fix without quantity becoming an issue.
