WEST VALLEY CITY -- A little girl fell through a window screen Monday and landed two stories to the ground at an apartment complex in West Valley City.
Bianca Lopez was playing with her son on the lawn where she witnessed her neighbor's 4-year-old daughter fall from the window.
"My heart just dropped. I was like, 'is she OK?" said Lopez.
Lopez called the police who came to help and found the girl with minor injuries.
It was an accident that could have been much worse. And it has the Fire Marshall warning parents, as the season grows warmer and more residents are opening up their windows, to be mindful of children and their safety.
"These kinds of injuries are very preventable. In any event if one of the kids was playing by the window, often times parents will put furniture or something there by the window and the kids will climb up on that," says Fire Marshall Bob Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald says that often children will lean on the window screen where it is lightly secured by small prongs. Those prongs will often pop out when pressure is applied.
"What a tragedy it is to have a little one injured that was playing five minutes ago and in a hospital for months and months after that trying to recover," says Fitzgerald.
