SALEM, Utah - Hundreds of children with special needs gathered at Salem Park for a day of fishing in an event that started with 15 children going fishing several decades ago.
More than 1,000 children, most from Utah County, gather in Salem for the annual tradition, which started 23 years ago.
"So we got some kids together took them up and showed them how to fish on it and through the years its grown to this," said Kevin Pritchett, a volunteer.
Home Depot and Fresh Market sponsor the trip, and almost 500 volunteers give their time to show kids how to catch fish.
"Sometimes its the only day of the year they actually get to come out and spend the day fishing. We look forward to it every single year," said Sarah Flinder with the Forest Service.
The fishing trip takes place on the second Tuesday in May every year at Salem Park.
